Contact the artists The artists involved in illustrating Heavy words lightly thrown come from a wide range of backgrounds socially and artistically. One idea behind the book was to showcase a variety of artists and to blend different styles together. Another was to challenge the perception of what a reader might expect from nursery rhyme illustration. What might be called the traditional approach is in there but so too are more adventurous takes on the genre. The artists were given a fairly wide brief, basically to interpret the rhyme as they saw fit. In some cases this meant taking one strand of the story and emphasising that, whilst others chose to encapsulate the whole rhyme in one unified image. Some even went off on a delicious tangent and came up with an image that brought an extra dimension to the reason behind the rhyme itself.
