TRUE BLUE
A MUSICAL ABOUT MARGARET THATCHER
‘The one trait common to all great women is the will to be ruthless.’
So says Margaret Thatcher, the ambitious blonde heroine of this explosive new musical. TRUE BLUE is a blue-blooded fairytale turned tragedy; an all-singing, all-dancing spectacular written by Chris Roberts and David Fernandes, with music by Eldred Stevenson. The score is influenced by songs of the period yet references traditional music hall conventions. Featuring a cast that includes Ronald Reagan and Norman Tebbit singing such diverse and fantastic numbers as the gospel-inspired "Eyes like Caligula", the triumphalist anthem "F**k The North" (that’s stuff the north in the matinee version), and the upbeat funk-soul "Gotcha!".
TRUE BLUE is a story of ambition, power, love and politics defining one of the most profound and cold-hearted decades in British history. From the blame and whine of the recession; the wealth and damning praise of economic recovery; to the blood and thunder of picket lines and poll tax riots; the name of Margaret Thatcher continues to inflame our every political dialogue with adulation, acrimony and bitter accusation. TRUE BLUE uses the medium of the musical to light-heartedly explore the motivation of the key players in the struggle; Margaret herself, her blonde rival Michael Heseltine and erstwhile ally Geoffrey Howe.
Margaret's story of the blues is a legacy yet to heal and this production puts it all up there on stage. Whether you remember losing your school milk, or if you’ve even vaguely wondered what business the state had running our industries in the first place, this show will leave you with a song on your lips and a grateful shudder that those days are behind us. Rich with drama, passion, intrigue and humour, TRUE BLUE is a theatrical experience far from conservative.
